Not many of us can imagine life without bread, yet in recent years our consumption has declined. Perhaps because what’s sold as bread has ceased to have beauty, flavour, texture or aroma.

Whether it’s a thick slice of bread and jam when everyone’s back from school, or a buttery brioche for Saturday breakfast, an airy ciabatta stuffed with antipasti, or a slice of toasted sourdough with a bowl of hummous, I’d like to encourage you to put more bread back into your diet.

Far better to feed half a Pobble to a 13 year old footballer than a packet of custard creams.
